Maternity leave
Working women in Lucerne are entitled to 14 weeks’ paid maternity leave. During this time, they continue to receive at least 80 per cent of their pay. For the first eight weeks following the birth, mothers are not allowed to work. This period is defined by law as maternity leave.
Paternity leave
In Lucerne, fathers are legally allowed two weeks of paid paternity leave after the birth of a child. Unlike maternity leave, paternity leave is flexible: it may be taken all at once or in individual days within six months after the birth of the child. It is not common in Switzerland to have parental leave that can be divided freely between mother and father.
Family allowances
Families with children get financial support in Lucerne in the form of family allowances. These are paid as child allowances for children up to the age of 16 and as education allowances for young people in education up to the age of 25. All working parents are entitled to these benefits. Family allowances are registered and paid out by the employer each month together with the salary payment.
